Today, Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr. issued the following statement on the Death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist
Like the entire country, I am saddened at the passing of our Chief Justice. Chief Justice William Rehnquist nobly gave the bulk of his professional life to public service, and he contributed much to the well-being of our republic.
Despite our different approaches to jurisprudence and constitutional philosophy, I have always had the utmost respect for Chief Justice Rehnquist. He possessed a first-rate mind and always showed the highest regard for the federal judiciary, the United States Supreme Court, and the legal profession. Perhaps the best compliment that can be paid to the Chief Justice is that even his intellectual foes found him to be a fair, effective and congenial leader of the third branch of our government. He embodied the dignity and integrity of the office of Chief Justice of the United States.
As the Rehnquist Court comes to a close with the passing of the Chief Justice, we should accord him the enormous respect he is due.
